“…Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God,
and the prisoners were listening to them.”
Acts 16:25
Spiritual Disciplines
When we think of spiritual disciplines, we often call for the prioritization of bible reading and prayer; but God also desires for us to bring our worship. In II Samuel, we read that David worshipped the Lord wholeheartedly and without regard for the opinion of others—even drawing criticism from his wife for not behaving like a king. This type of worship is rarely seen among Christian men today. Unfortunately, many of us view worship as an activity best done on Sunday mornings.
An Awkward Challenge
Recently I was challenged by a friend on this topic when he suggested we begin our time in prayer by singing a song. Hopefully, my face didn’t reveal that I was caught off guard. There in my living room, we played a worship song on a Bluetooth speaker and sang—probably off-key!
It Worked!
Despite my reservation, this was a worshipful experience that led into a time of genuine prayer with God. My challenge for you today is to add worship to your time with the Lord. I used to listen to a preacher who said to find the things that “stir your affections for the Lord”. When we find those things and put them into practice; we are giving God what is most appropriate: worship.
