“While we were God’s enemies,

we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son.”

1 Corinthians 1:18

Our View

Paul said in 1 Corinthians 1:18, “For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” He says later in 2:2, “For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.” Our view of the world is to be through the lens of the cross.

A Great Example

Robert Scott was an officer in the British Royal Navy who led two expeditions to the Antarctic regions in the early 1900s. While there and exploring, to avoid snow blindness, he had to wear goggles. Most snow goggles had a small slit, but Robert Scott carved crosses in his goggles. He wanted the reminder to “see” the world through the lens of the cross. What a great example to us today.

Don't Get Blinded

It is easy to get blinded by the world around us and all the distractions and dangerous things it has to offer. But when we see the world through the lens of the cross, it changes us. Andrew Randal said, “That is what we must learn to do: understand both the meaning of history and the purpose of our lives through the lens of Jesus Christ."

No Room

When we see the world through that lens, we see sinners as people in need of a Savior. We see other Christians as precious souls saved through the blood of Christ who deserve compassion, grace, and kindness. We need to see our past through the lens of Christ. There is no room for pride because salvation is only through the cross. There is no need for shame or guilt because Jesus has paid the price for our sins. We can look at the future through this lens to see the need for our kingdom work here on Earth and our future in heaven.

What Do You Chose to Wear?

So, what goggles are you putting on every day? Put on your cross lenses and it will change how you view the people around you, your past, and your future. To quote Joby Martin, “The gospel changes everything about everything about everything.”
