What is your most prized possession?

“Children are a gift from the Lord;

they are a reward from him.”

Psalm 127:3

A Prized Possession

Many years ago I was doing player evaluations for Upward basketball when a grandfather came to pick up his granddaughter. The grandfather’s name was Jim Stone.

I was familiar with Mr. Stone. My kids’ school was named after him, and my wife had been to a garage sale at his house where she had bought my son a bunch of baseball cards.

We struck up a conversation, and he was indeed an avid baseball card collector. He was excited to tell me about his most prized card.

His kids had recently bought Mr. Stone one of the 5 remaining Honus Wagner tobacco cards – the most valuable baseball card in the world!

He proudly told me how they acquired it, how it was being protected and stored. He even told me he was planning to personally carry the card to New York to have it appraised!

The card had incredible value. You could tell he was very proud of it.

Your Prized Possessions

Men, you too have been gifted something of incredible value – indeed something priceless.

Your wife and kids are gifts from God.

They hold more value than any earthly possession. This must be our perspective – that God has entrusted his prized, priceless possessions to our care.

A Stewardship Mindset

We should model God as we create and cultivate an environment where they can flourish in the way God has designed them:

  • Where God is the aim

  • Where grace abounds

  • Where love is not lacking

  • Where words are seasoned with encouragement

  • Where discipline is balanced with discipleship

God has entrusted them to us and will judge us on how well we steward his blessing.

  • If God were to come to your home today would he be pleased?

  • Would you be proud of the environment you are creating for your family to flourish?

May God be honored as we lead our families like the priceless gift they are.
