“Therefore lift your drooping hands
and strengthen your weak knees…”
Hebrews 12:12
Strengthen Your Weak Knees
The Bible does not treat us like disembodied souls floating through life.
It speaks to tired hands. Weak knees. Straight paths. Discipline. Endurance. Training.
Hebrews 12 comes right after the call to “run with endurance the race that is set before us.” Then the writer says, “strengthen your weak knees.”
That is not just spiritual poetry. That’s actually great advice for the fitness "F". If your knees hurt when you run, walk, climb stairs, or try to get back into shape, the knee may not be the whole problem. The knee is often where you feel the pain, but it is not always where the breakdown begins.
One of the most overlooked contributors is the calf. Your calves are not just there to look strong in shorts. They are shock absorbers. Every step you take sends force through your body. When your foot hits the ground, your calf and Achilles system help absorb, control, and redirect that force.
When your calves are weak, stiff, or undertrained, your knee often gets stuck paying the bill. That can show up as pain around the kneecap, aching when you run downhill, heavy foot strikes, calves that always feel tight, or pain that disappears with rest but comes back as soon as you start moving again. Rest may calm things down. But rest does not rebuild capacity. At some point, weak things must be strengthened.
So start simple:
Train controlled calf raises. Use both straight-knee and bent-knee positions.
Build single-leg strength.
Walk hills wisely.
Progress your running gradually.
Do not jump straight from “I need to get in shape” to “I’m going to punish my body into submission.” That is not discipline. That is ego wearing gym shoes. Faithful "fitness" is different. It is patient. Honest. Consistent. It listens to the body without worshiping comfort. It strengthens what is weak without pretending weakness is the final word.
And as you strengthen your knees by training your calves faithfully, I want to invite you to something dear to my heart that is coming up soon. The Faithful 5K is happening August 15 at 8:00 AM at Matthews Park in Greenbrier, and I want you to join me. This will be the first-ever faith-based fitness event out of Matthews Park, and it is built around a simple conviction: We can glorify God with our bodies.
You do not have to be fast. You do not have to be a “runner.” You can run, walk, bring your family, or simply show up ready to take the next faithful step. But I want you there.
Put the date on the calendar. Strengthen your weak knees. Run the race set before you.
Register for the Faithful 5K here: Faithful 5K - 08/15/2026 - Race Information.
Train hard. Pray harder.
With you in the work,
Coach Alex VanHouten
