What Is Your Greatest Need?

If you could ask God for just one thing, what would it be?

For most, what is most immediate becomes most pressing.

For many, that pressing issue is money—especially in a culture where rising prices, particularly housing, have far outpaced wage growth. It’s real, and it’s hard on many families. We can easily find ourselves in this tension where finances become a pressure cooker. Unwittingly, it takes over the throne of our heart. This is the constant warning around money and what led Jesus to say, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

In Psalm 27, David was in his own pressure cooker. He was in a literal battle. He had real problems and no easy answers. He needed resources, safety, and protection. He needed a plan. He had plenty he could ask for.

But in the middle of that uncertainty, David concluded that, more than anything, he wanted to be close to God. Presence was more important than provision, protection, or possessions.

God’s presence is our greatest need.

What David reveals is a principle for how we should think about money—and really, about life: the desire of our heart becomes the master of our lives.

If we have provision without His presence, the provision can become our master. But when we prioritize His presence, He becomes our master, and we begin to see everything else through Him.

Closeness to God reminds us that: 

• God is the source of all things.

• God is bigger than our circumstances.

• God is in control, and we are not.

• God is not a means to an end; He is the prize.

Here is the prayer of my heart: I want to be so close to God that I cannot see my blessings, or my burdens, without first seeing Him. He is what I need most.

So today, what is your ONE thing? What is the real desire of your heart? Maybe this is where we need to begin: reorienting our lives so that God is truly the ONE thing.
