Let's up our game

“As iron sharpens iron,

so a friend sharpens a friend.”

Proverbs 27:17

Upping our game

Who’s in your huddle of Christian buddies? The ones we run up and down the field of life with matter.

I’m thankful for the teammates who have picked me up after life’s fumbles, penalties, and sacks. Those who remind me where the goal posts of true success are and challenge me to put eternal points on the board are MVPs in my book.

Impact players seek to be men of good character who hold others accountable. They have awareness of what’s out of bounds or when they are headed in the wrong direction. (Proverbs 27:17) “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” Remember the guys who give up? No one ever does.

This is Critical

Wisely selecting our friends is critical. 1 Corinthians 15:33 states, “Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character.”  Hanging around “friends” who can lead us out of bounds, generates penalties that make comebacks more difficult.

Our lifestyles should regularly incorporate drafting rookies in the faith to disciple; which includes friends that don’t know Jesus. Time outs will be needed and commitment challenged when they are off sides, unmotivated, or discouraged. It’s been said, “Sweat more in preparation and bleed less in battle.” Their personal relationship with Jesus is on the line and eternity awaits.

Keep it Balanced

Look for coaching opportunities to hand off encouragement and spend time in the off season getting yourself in shape for game situations.

“So, speak encouraging words to one another. Build up hope so you'll all be together in this, no one left out, no one left behind. I know you're already doing this; just keep on doing it,” (1 Thessalonians 5:11, MSG)

Christian Friendship Denotes Investment

Investment takes time. “True friendship is a plant of slow growth," according to George Washington; and he knew a thing or two about leadership. Time on the friendship grid iron involves expense, intentionality, injury, effort, and inconvenience. But, as with most wise investments, the payoff is well worth it.

We are all in the game and champions play as one. There is no injured reserve status.  Be creative with your playbook. Have fun and make memories. Play it forward. And in doing so, allow your kids and grandkids to see the value you place on Kingdom victories.

In life, it can be tempting to run out of bounds or desperately launch a Hail Mary. But, with the correct play calling from wise mentors, we can sustain drives and increase our opportunities for the abundant life. MD5 foundational principles are based on biblical truths, including the importance of solid Christian friendships.

That’s a winning strategy that can support us in successful seasons or during 4th down and miles to go life situations.
