"...and there was evening,
and there was morning—the first day."
Genesis 1:5
This Got My Attention
I’ve been reading a book by Jon Gordon called The Power of Positive Habits. In it, he states:
“How you start the day is a huge factor in the kind of day you’re going to have. That’s why you want to make a habit to master your morning instead of letting your morning master you. If you wake up and scroll on your phone, check your email, look at social media, and watch the news, your attitude and morning will be dictated by the news, circumstances, the urgency of others, the tone and comments on social media, and the problems in the world. But if you create a morning routine filled with rock-solid rituals, instead of letting the world create you, you will create your world.”
A Simple Point and Good Advice
Six times in Genesis 1, God stated that “there was evening and there was morning.” Did you catch that? The evening comes first. This is the “habit before the habit” that sets up our morning. The evening is when we remove resistance, create momentum, and set up the morning to flow as we desire.
We need to master our morning with habits that create margin to make us the men God has called us to be. This is our daily setup for success. A morning by design—and not default—will allow us to stay on track with our Life Plan.
Don’t let the distractions mentioned above steal your energy and rob your joy one tap, one click, or one text message at a time. Start the day with the Word of God (a paper copy!) and maybe add some exercise and a healthy breakfast. The evening before... make sure everything needed for each of these is easily accessible.
The Truth
It’s very easy to get caught in the trap of distractions. Instead, bait yourself for success by setting yourself up the evening before.
Apply It
Take a fresh look at your evening and morning routines. Maybe your schedule has changed for the summer, or maybe a new job or some of those digital distractions have crept in and derailed you. Start over this evening and make tomorrow morning all that God desires for you!
