What are you trusting the Sovereign King of the universe for today?

“Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him,

but the righteous shall live by his faith.”

On Repeat

One of the greatest statements in the Bible is repeated four times: “... the just shall live by his faith” (cf. Habakkuk 2:4; Romans 1:17; Galatians 3:11; Hebrews 10:38). We speak of “faith” frequently, but what does the word really mean? Faith is actually an attitude toward God in which you believe Him to be a faithful God who will perform all that He has promised. Faith, then, in its simplest definition, is a belief or trust in God. As a matter of fact, the words “faith,” “belief,” and “trust” are all used interchangeably in the New Testament.

A Different Belief

The English word “believe” is not as strong in meaning as the Greek word. We all “believe” that George Washington was the first president of the United States, but we do not trust him for anything, nor have we committed our lives to him. But when we say that we “believe” in the Lord Jesus Christ, we are trusting Him for our eternal salvation and we have committed our lives to serving Him.

Biblical Faith

The late Dr. Jack Hyles defined faith this way: “Biblical faith actually has three components: (1) I believe that God did everything He said that He did. (2) I believe that God could do it all over again today. (3) I believe that God could use me to do it all over again.”

Dr. Hyles' definition of faith teaches us three things: (1) God had all power in the past, and you can trust Him. (2) God still has all power in the present, and you can trust Him. (3) God has always used common, ordinary people to do His work, and you can trust Him to use your life to make a difference today. In essence, faith in God has three elements: past, present, and personal.

Take God at His Word

A fundamental concept of the Christian life is that God rewards those who trust Him. A man is saved by faith, and a Christian lives by faith. Just as we fully trusted God to save us, we must fully trust Him each day as we endeavor to live for Him. Faith is simply taking God at His Word.
