“Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit,
are you now being perfected by the flesh?”
Galatians 3:3
What is a Coach?
Many people turn to wellness for life coaches to help them achieve their health and fitness goals. A coach is someone we look to for both expertise and accountability. A coach understands how all of our activities fit together – exercise, nutrition, and rest. A coach can help us achieve a specific goal and establish a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.
When it comes to our spiritual health – do you have a life coach? Or are you trying to figure it out on your own? Do you find yourself exercising regularly (e.g. – reading the Bible) but not seeing much change?
Well, I’ve got good news and bad news.
First the Good News
Jesus never intended for us to figure it out on our own.
He provided specific means for us to get the coaching and accountability we need to grow spiritually - through discipleship and the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit. Discipleship is the intentional spiritual investment we make in the lives of each other. But ultimately discipleship should lead us to walk in step with the Holy Spirit; because it is only through the Holy Spirit that we experience sustainable and transformative spiritual growth.
Galatians 3:3 “Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?”
Now the Bad News
Too many of us are neglecting to heed our Life Coach, the Holy Spirit.
We are trying to work out our faith through our own works - without ever submitting and seeking the leading and direction of the Holy Spirit. We rely upon God for our salvation, but fail to rely upon Him for continuing transformation.
The impact of any coach is directly tied to our willingness to submit to their plans and heed their guidance. The same is true of the Holy Spirit. It is foolish to believe we will experience spiritual growth apart from seeking and submitting to the Holy Spirit.
Don’t be foolish, listen to your coach. He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it if only we surrender and submit to his leading.
